They put him in the water on a Tuesday.
Three men, one car, one body wrapped in chain — standard work for the east dock. Clean enough that by morning the tide would take what was left, and the east side would go back to not asking questions it didn't want answered. The harbour had swallowed harder things than one nobody mechanic with the wrong friends and the wrong address.
His name was Elias Cole. Korean War veteran. Returned wrong, like most of them. He'd come back to New Briar with shrapnel in his left shoulder and a silence behind his eyes that his fiancée Rose called distant and his brother Tommy called haunted and that Elias himself never tried to name. He fixed engines for a living. He kept his head down. He tried, for a while, to believe that trying was enough.
He was wrong about that. He was wrong about a lot of things that year.
The chains hit the water first. Then him. The cold of the harbour in June 1953 was a different kind of cold — not the cold of weather but the cold of something decided, something final. His lungs filled. His eyes closed.
He did not drown.
The east side at two in the morning had its own kind of quiet. Not peace — peace was for places that had earned it. This was the quiet of everyone keeping their eyes down and their mouths shut, the quiet of a neighbourhood that had learned which sounds to pretend not to hear.
The alley behind the Blue Note Jazz Club was one of those sounds.
Vincent Sallow had been in the business long enough to know what a set-up smelled like. He thought he could smell one now — thought, for a half-second, that the darkness at the far end of the alley was wrong, was the wrong kind of still — and then something hit him hard across the jaw and the thinking stopped.
He was not a small man. He was not, by any measure, a soft one. He had broken three men's legs in this same alley over the past two years, which was how the east side worked, which was how Frank Moretti kept his books clean and Vince Sallow Sr. kept his docks running. Vinnie was the muscle. He'd never had reason to doubt what that meant.
He was being educated on the subject.

The name on the wall was three inches high. Painted in the dark with whatever was to hand. It read: MORETTI.
It was the kind of message that meant different things to different people. To the east side it meant nothing, because the east side had not seen it and would not speak of it. To Vincent Sallow, coming back to consciousness with seven broken bones and a ringing in his skull that wouldn't quit for a week, it meant something specific and personal and deeply unwelcome. To Detective Sarah Marlow, arriving at the scene at quarter past two with a cold coffee and a notebook that was already full of questions without answers, it meant the night had just got longer.
She wrote VIGILANTE in her notebook. She looked at it for a moment. She crossed it out.
She wrote: GHOST.

By morning the New Briar Gazette had a headline. By afternoon the headline had a name. By evening the name was everywhere — on the lips of every cop on the east side, in the back booths of every bar from the docks to the hill, in the notebook of Detective Marlow, who was reading the paper in her car outside St. Jude's Hospital and saying it out loud just to see how it sounded.
Night Falls.
She didn't like how it sounded. She liked even less what it meant. Vigilantes were problems. Problems were problems. But the kind of problem that beat Vincent Sallow half to death and walked away clean in the middle of the east dock — that was a different category of problem, and she didn't have a word for it yet.
She closed the paper. She went inside. She had a different ghost to chase today.
He came every Sunday. He'd come every Sunday for eleven months and twelve days, and he'd talked for most of them — about the weather, about the garage, about Yannis and his terrible coffee and his worse Greek proverbs. About nothing, mostly. The kind of nothing you say to someone who can't answer.
Today he talked about the list.
"First name," he said. He was sitting in the chair by the window, elbows on his knees, looking at his brother's face and trying to find something in it that wasn't just sleep. "Vinnie Sallow. He'll live. I wanted him to." He paused. "I think I wanted him to."
The machines breathed in the silence. Tommy Cole lay in his hospital bed exactly as he had for eleven months and twelve days, and did not answer, and Elias sat with that for a while before he spoke again.
"There are more names," he said. "I'll get to them."
He left before the nurses came for the evening round. He walked down four flights of stairs, through the lobby, out into the rain. He turned his collar up. He walked east.
St. Jude's Hospital ward, dim light, quiet. Elias in civilian clothes, hunched, talking to his comatose brother. ]
He knocked on no doors.
He was not the kind of man who knocked on doors. He was the kind of man who entered rooms at the moment no one in the room was ready for him, which in his experience was every moment, because nobody was ever ready for Frank Moretti.
There were three men at the kitchen table of the Albani tenement on Dock Street. They were playing cards. They were made men, or something close to it — cousins of cousins of Sallow family muscle, the kind of men who did not worry about what came through the door because nothing that came through their door had ever given them reason to worry.
They did not see his face. They did not hear his voice. They heard the door open and they heard what came next and then they heard nothing at all.
He picked up his hat from the floor by the entrance, where it had fallen when he'd come in. He placed it back on his head. He walked out into the rain.
He never said a word.
